Continuing our celebration of National Crochet Month, this week’s guest post is from crochet designer, Lorrene Eppolite of Cre8tion Crochet. She HAS written a comprehensive blog post that offers detailed information on how to design and customize crochet hats. When asking my followers what they have the hardest time designing on their own, they almost always answer “hats.” It’s not …

I’d like you to accompany me on an exciting journey as I learn to design my own crocheted garments. I’m no expert, so I’m starting out very simply – simple shapes (squares and rectangles), easy-to-execute stitch patterns, and the ways in which various yarns and crochet hook sizes result in a variety of fabrics.
You’ll learn along with me the importance of–
— Taking accurate body measurements
— Swatching
— Determining gauge
— Deciding on the amount of ease you want in your garment
–Figuring out how your fabric will drape
— Blocking
— Turning your designs in to patterns
…and much much more.
My hope is that we can gain confidence together to start designing our own cool, crochet creations!
Right after all of my holiday crochet gift-making was done, I got to work crocheting a baby blanket for my cousin, Crystal, in Gary, Indiana who was about to have a baby. I didn’t want to use my “go to” yarn, Red Heart Super Saver, because I wanted a softer yarn for this project, but it had to be acrylic. …

I typically start thinking about the Christmas gifts I’m going to crochet in October, but, I don’t know what happened this year. It wasn’t until the first week of November when it finally dawned on me that I need to get cracking and start …
have yet again been inspired by a pin that’s made its round on Pinterest among crocheters and knitters and anyone else who uses acrylic yarn. The pin links to a photo tutorial on how to soften acrylic yarn BEFORE you use it. Many of you are probably aware of the fact that you can soften a finished piece made from …
No, there isn’t a “Round 1” post; you’ve arrived at the right place as I take you on an odyssey of adventure and discovery in my attempt to design and crochet a granny square cardigan for myself. I had this big idea a couple of months ago to design a shrug that incorporated a big granny square in the back. …
Don’t Let Your WIPs Languish This Galaxy afghan is one project that I’m glad is finally done! I just looked at my pattern notes, and I can’t believe I started it on June 8, 2010, over a year ago! But I let it languish for a good six months before finally biting the bullet and finishing it. I spoke a …
Is it possible to crochet a granny square baby blanket for a one year-old in half a day so you’ll have a gift to give him at his birthday party on the same day? I found out the answer to this question when I tried to do it. No, it isn’t possible. In fact, it took me approximately two weeks …
A Timeless, Crocheted Afghan That’s Easy to Make A project that I’ve been working on for some time now is the Galaxy Afghan that’s featured in Woman’s Day Crochet Showcase, an out-of-print book published in 1980. You’re probably wondering why I would choose to crochet an afghan from such an old publication (I bought it used on Amazon), but when …
If you haven’t read it yet, check out my eBook, How to Create Crochet Patterns – A Step-by-Step Guide. I decided to write it because I figured there are a lot of crocheters out there who have started designing their own stuff and could use a step-by-step guide on how to put together patterns for their designs. I did …
Well, I finally did it. I’ve uploaded a pattern I designed for a good friend of mine for her birthday to Ravelry for sale (It’s now on Etsy. See the “buy now” link below). It’s extremely simple to make, uses three main stitches – chain, single crochet, and half double crochet – and one stitch that’s a bit challenging — …
Yes, I actually decided to make a sweater out of a granny square, something I never thought I’d do. All those ’70s granny square clothes drove me crazy. Inspired by a Lily Chin Pattern So what made me actually consider such a thing? No, the devil didn’t make me do it, A Lily Chin pattern that I found fiddling around …
I can’t believe it’s taken me so long to get back into blogging. Yes, I have been crocheting up a storm, but also doing taxes for three people (myself included), so that’s why you haven’t seen my “face in the place” for a while. My Knit for Kids Crocheted Sweater Pattern So here’s what I’ve been up to. I’m still …

As promised, I have been working on a crocheted sweater that could be used in addition to the one offered by Guideposts’ Knit for Kids charity. Knitwear Design Software A while back, like a couple of years ago, I purchased the Knitwear Knitting, Crochet and Machine Knitting Design software, thinking that I would use it to create patterns for crocheted garments. The software is designed primarily for knitting, but you are supposed …
Adrienne Models Her Crocheted Sierra Skirt I finally finished the Sierra Skirt that I was crocheting for my daughter, Adrienne. Doesn’t she look cool in it!?! The “mostly” in the title represents the fact that she didn’t want the full fringe that the pattern calls for, primarily because she didn’t want it to be dragging on the ground. So I …
“It Ain’t Ease-y on a Sunday Morning!” Remember that Lionel Richie song, “Easy on a Sunday Morning”? I found out this past Sunday that ease is something I totally forgot to consider as I continue the saga of the Sierra Skirt that I am crocheting for my daughter. If you remember from the last post, I found what I thought …
