It only took three and a half years to accomplish, but I can finally say that I have a craft room that I’m happy with. As you can see, I had a yarn stash that was completely out of control, and I didn’t have adequate shelving or storage space at the time to accommodate it all.
This photo was taken shortly after the house I live in with my daughter and a roommate (communal living is almost a must in Hawaii given the high cost of housing) was remodeled. We also made the decision not to bring in a fourth roommate which gave me a little more space to spread out.
I had to make some hard decisions about what yarn to keep and what yarn to let go of because, even with the added space, I thought I still had too much (“No such thing!” I hear some of you shouting).
I gave a box full of leftover yarn balls to a friend who wants to use them in her art work. But I admit, I did throw away some of the really old yarn that I considered no longer usable. But even with the de-stash, I still have a lot of yarn at my disposal.
My daughter decided to get a new stand for her TV and passed her old shelves down to me. She gave me the laundry hamper, too. I am definitely not one to pass up free stuff, so I gladly accepted them. Plus, I can say that I’m doing my part to recycle some things that are still usable instead of throwing them away.
The tall, white cabinet, for example, used to be our kitchen pantry, but we got a new, built-in one with the remodel. So I figured it would make a decent storage space for some yarn and projects.
There’s even space in the middle of the room to set up a sewing table or lay down blocking mats. I could even set up a card table and do tarot card readings, my other passion.
And of course, I had to have space for my mini-trampoline or CellerciserTM which I jog on daily to stay fit. I set it up by the window so I can look out at the Ko’olau mountains and Kaneohe Bay while I’m rebounding. Believe me, I need all the motivation I can get to exercise every day! But 10 minutes is all I need to do on this remarkable piece of exercise equipment. So I really have no excuse.
By the way, those purple boxes next to the trampoline contain my stash of tarot card decks which I collected almost as avidly back in the ’90s as I do yarn today.
Finally, the folded, green towel next to the CellerciserTM is an invitation to General Meow, our housemate’s cat, to spend some time in the space if she so chooses. But she looks pretty content where she is, if you asked me.
If she does decide to grace the room with her presence, I’ll have to dust or vacuum regularly to make sure no stray hairs are left behind. But since I don’t allow her in my bedroom where I do all of my crocheting, and the stored yarn is in protective plastic, I’m not too worried about contaminating the yarn with cat hair. Needless to say, the door will remain closed when I’m blocking.
What kind of craft room have you set up for needlecrafting and yarn storage?
